Advice on how to choose a cat
People often ask me advice on how to choose a cat to adopt. So I typed it up for myself to save, and thought I'd share:
Unless you get two, you should get an older cat (2+ years, still young!). And unless you are planning on adopting another cat later, it would be great if you would adopt a cat that "needs to be the only cat" in the home!
Oh, the other thing too is- usually two cats is not 2x the work and cost of one cat. Getting a 2nd cat is not usually a huge burden since you already have all the stuff. Often they will keep each other entertained, taking the pressure off you to play with them and pay them attention. Of course, you have 2x the chance of vet bills though... and if they are really bonded to each other, they may not bond with you as much.
Remember: kittens are so cute, they really steal your heart, but they are a lot of work, get lonely, jump on the counter, eat your plants, knock all your shit over, need to be trained, etc. Also they may be pretty now, but their colours change as they get older and you can't always be sure what they will look like.
Fully grown cats are usually already trained, less work because they are much more mellow and low maintenance, and since they are already fully grown, you know they will keep looking they way they do. They are also more ok with you being at work all day as long as you leave the blinds partially open so they can just lie in a sunbeam (Cats are solar-powered, don't you know!)
Also, be open to black cats. MEOW has SO many wonderful black cats that get overlooked because other cats are "prettier" and catch people's eye.

The story of Zieki, who fell out the window.
http://zieki.zxq.net/**Warning** This post does request money at the end, not to be rude, just really in need of help. But not only money, your warm furry happy wishes for zieki or also very appreciated. I think the story itself is rather good too. Cross-posted through some cat loving communities, sorry if you see a repeat.**
I heard meowing on my way in the door one Saturday around 5 pm. This is not un-common as the downstairs neighbors have kitties that usually sit in the window and i like to meow back at them. Instead I saw a cat that looked exactly like Zieki, Kirstens little fluffy cat. Slight disbelief occurred in believing this was our cat, because he doesn't even like to go outside. So I scooped him up, concerned that he got out, but not too worried, and brought him indoors.
As soon as I put him down, I screamed, because he immediately fell forward and proceeded to flop like some horrible type of fish out of water. He had broken his legs! (i thought it was just one, but turns out to be both). This was a really horrible thing to see and no pet-owner should ever see their pets like that.
He didn't deserve this, he is such a nice cat. Never an angry thought in his cute little fluffy head. (Hes technically not mine, but we are very close and my cat Zander and him are good at being fluffy together) He is also not the brightest one, and I would never have believed he could be so brave.
2 broken legs! He was crying outside, but as soon as I had him in my arms he seemed fine. I was so impressed with him.
Luckily the huge cat hospital in Boston happens to be a short distance away, so he was in excellent care within a half hour. He was there from Saturday night to just coming home on Thursday.
While they took him away from us to check all his bones and then having to do 2 surgeries, one on each leg, I discovered some awful news. He had fallen out the window (3rd story) the night before! Me and his mother Kirsten had both been out that night and since we have a rather large house it was not unusual to not see a cat for a little bit. Turns out he fell out with the window screen and must have been knocked unconscious for a bit. Our downstairs neighbor found the screen and saw a cat (one of our 3rd roommates cats - Mio) in the window and panicked thinking she might fall out or jump and when she alerted our other roommate, I guess she acted like "oh whatever, thats weird". I'm really angry with her, she checked for her 2 cats (who happen to be rather nasty bitches I must say) and not for Zieki or Zander.
So the poor thing who doesn't like to be outside spent his first (and lets hope only) night outside in immense pain. Its so horrible.
But! The good news is that he made it through his surgeries wonderfully. Everyone at the vet fell in love with him and said he just kept purring and was happy to let them help him. When he came home on Thursday they said he probably wouldn't feel up to walking for at least a week, but he refused to even lay down! He was walking all over the place, exploring and enjoying the attention. He even jumped up on the bed (we tried to stop him of course) and did one of his most favorite things - hang out in a paper bag. He is doing so damn good and I'm really proud of him. Kirsten herself has been doing okay too, managed to stay mostly calm in the stress of all this including the financial cost. (There was never a minute in which we considered not to do the surgery, even though the vets kept asking about seeing finance people)
My friend made a quick website, where you could donate if you like, as the vet bills are over $5000 and we are rather poor people: http://zieki.zxq.net/
But more importantly it also has some wicked cute photos of him and should be updated in a few minutes with pictures of him looking all silly and shaved after surgery. We'll continue updating his recovery too.
Much love from out kitty family to yours,
LindseyModerators - please let me know if you prefer this be removed or behind a cut or anything, I'd be happy to oblige. <3

Hello my fellow cat loving sisters and brothers. Here are two teeny pictures of our wonderful new friends Tutu and Iggy Ziggy Stardust Kitty. Tutu is a Bengal and Ziggy is of course Siamese. We have been doing cat rescue for more than twenty-five years now, and I love kitties of every shape, size, and color, but we also have some pure breeds because I got involved in breed rescue a few years ago, and can't resist them. These are thumb sized photos so I won't slow anyone down here, but I've got larger ones over on my journal behind the cut, along with a big batch of pictures of some of our beloved cat family. Come on by and see : )

First off, it's for my foster cat- I don't condone the irresponsibility of allowing cats to roam and breed.
- Milk production: is this obvious? Something that an untrained person can feel? Or is the tummy too full and big to feel?
- Can you see contractions when they start or just the contractions in hard labour? Like, can you see small flexes or her tummy muscles tensing up before she actually passes a kitten?
- I've read that personality changes are evident (more affectionate, reclusive, lots of purring). Do these happen only in the few hours beforehand or can it go on for a day or two?
- Do the kittens "drop" when it's almost time, like in humans? I remember Nevan's kittens were quite low in her abdomen- right by her hips, while T'mia's are still right under her ribcage. I only had one day before Nevan had hers, so I'm wondering if I should watch for that change too.
T'mia is doing well- doesn't seem to like the other cats though. She loves me and doesn't mind me feeling the wigglies in her tummy (as long as I give her attention by petting her on the head too!) I don't know her well enough to know if her personality has changed, but her nipples are very prominent (but I don't feel any obvious milk). She looks like she is starting to get uncomfortable, but is still quite active and doesn't want to stay in her room. She thinks she is still a thin, bouncy kitten- jumping up on the kitty shelf and exploring every door I open.

Cat Condo/Tower For Sale!
I am selling my cat's tower/condo. He doesn't use it enough anymore, and it is too big for our little apartment! I thought if someone is in our area they might be interested in it for their kitties!!
It is 5 and a half feet tall approx. It is beige/cream color. It is all carpeted except the poles are sisal rope for scratching. It has been used for about 8 months by my kitty Jack. However it is still in good condition. Could use a vacuum though..=P
I am asking $85.00 for pick-up only. These are VERY expensive at Petco and Petsmart..places like that. So it is a good deal. I am in Phoenix, AZ.
E-mail me if interested at email@example.com. I have lot's of pictures.

I have a sick kitty
One of the 9 month ol kittens I've been fostering since they were 1 month old has got something wrong.
He's been throwing up for three days (Mostly just a little fluid now) and last night we noticed he has diarrhea too. He also has developed a really digusting "ass" smell (or maybe it's an infection smell, I don't know- either way, it's really repulsive, hard for me to handle, but hubby doesn't even smell it.) So today, we took a look at his rear end and he has wet gross stuff in his fur and I'm certain some of it is blood. I called the org. I am fostering for, but I had to leave a msg as there was no answer, but for now has anyone here had this happen? What could be causing it, etc?

There's a new cat community up called felinebehavior
. It's a place to discuss your cat's strange behavior, be it curious, smart, comical, or just plain odd. Ask questions and discuss those unique feline behaviors that aren't necessarily problems, but get our attention.
I made this community because I've been part of a forum of the same nature that just seems to be dead now. I really enjoyed hearing about all these different cats' cute or quirky ways. I hope you'll all join and share your cats' with everyone. We can discuss solutions, laugh about the cute nature of your cat, or be there to support each other in those troubled times.
